Literally speaking the site is a graveyard: you will find garlands and flowers everywhere - presented by relatives of more than two hundred unfortunate miners who died in the terrible disaster on August 8, 1956. The seclusion and silence makes it a place of dignity. Though the 'Bois du Cazier' is intended to be kept as a monument, the buildings are in a pitiful state, emphasizing its cemetery-like character. A sad but peaceful place. The mine was restored and converted into a museum in 2002.
